Advising
The Department provides undergraduates interested in Psychology with a number of people who can help design the most fulfilling course of study possible. These advisors will continue to provide guidance as students progress through the concentration or secondary field! Students can also drop in to our weekly advising hours with any questions they have.
Types of Advising
Pre-concentrators work with concentration advisors to declare their concentration in their sophomore year. We offer pre-concentration advising events each semester, such as open houses or Exploring Fields of Study sessions, that are listed on the Harvard College Calendar of Events.
Concentration Advisors are assigned by house and are available for guidance on requirements, courses, research opportunities, and possible careers. When you declare a concentration in Psychology, the Concentration Advisor in your house will become your official advisor, approve your declaration on my.harvard, and sign your Crimson Cart.
Your Concentration Advisor will contact you at the start of each semester to check in, and you can contact them at any time. Your Advisor is your go-to person within the department – they will help you select courses, discuss your overall progress in the field, talk about your interests, and bring your attention to opportunities at Harvard and beyond.
Secondary field students are advised directly by the Undergraduate Program Coordinator for Psychology, Correna Cohen. You can reach out to her to schedule an appointment at correna_cohen@fas.harvard.edu, or stop by our drop-in office hours!
Psychology's Honors Thesis Program and Undergraduate Research Experience Advisor, Garth Coombs, is always happy to talk to students who are interested in undergraduate research or in writing a thesis. Email him at garthcoombs@fas.harvard.edu to set up a time to talk -- he's always happy to hear from students at any point in their research or thesis journey!
The Departmental Writing Fellow (DWF) is a writing resource available to any and all undergraduates enrolled in Psychology Department courses. The DWF offers discipline-specific writing advice, such as how to navigate the conventions of writing in psychology, as well as more general writing help.
The Undergraduate Planning Committee (UPC) consists of junior and senior concentrators who play a vital role in assisting the Undergraduate Office with planning and hosting events. The Undergraduate Office periodically hosts UPC brainstorming sessions to generate ideas for events and other ways to engage concentrators.
You'll likely spot members of the UPC at the Psychology table during advising fairs, at Psychology events during Visitas, and at our New Concentrator Welcome party! They're always excited to share their experiences with new & potential concentrators.
Your concentration advisor is a graduate student who can advise you about the graduate school application process, including their own experience with grad school. In addition, department faculty offer office hours and other opportunities like special faculty lunches throughout the semester, and are a great resource for questions about graduate study in Psychology.
Loredana George is the dedicated Psychology career advisor at the Mignone Center for Career Success. You can reach out to her to set up an appointment at george3@fas.harvard.edu; she also works with the Psychology Undergraduate Office to hold open Psychology career advising hours during the academic year.
